Polishing

Polishing is the finishing step that smooths and brightens a piece's surface, removing marks to bring the metal to a bright shine.

Polishing is the last stage in making a piece, where the surface is smoothed and brought to a bright shine. Using rotating wheels and progressively finer compounds, the polisher removes casting marks, file lines and scratches until the metal gleams, or works to a matte or textured finish instead.

From rough casting to finished shine

Work moves from coarse to fine. Early stages cut away tool marks and level the surface, while later stages with soft mops and fine rouge bring up the mirror shine. Skipping steps leaves a dull or hazy result, so the sequence matters.

Not every piece aims for a mirror. The same tools create satin, brushed or hammered effects, and antique styles are deliberately given a matte or oxidised finish, so polishing is as much about the chosen look as about shine.

Polishing in servicing

Polishing is not only for new pieces. Worn jewellery brought in for repair or cleaning is often re-polished to remove scratches and restore its shine, sometimes alongside re-plating on white gold.

Because each polish removes a whisker of metal, heavily worn pieces are polished sparingly to preserve detail and hallmarks over a lifetime of servicing.

Key points
  • Polishing removes marks and brings metal to a bright shine
  • Work runs from coarse cutting compounds to fine finishing rouge
  • The same tools create matte, satin or textured finishes
  • Worn pieces are re-polished during servicing and repair
FAQ

Polishing, in short.

Does polishing remove metal?

Yes, a very small amount each time, since it works by abrading the surface. That is why heavily worn or often serviced pieces are polished carefully to protect detail and hallmarks.

Can polishing create a matte finish?

Yes. By choosing different wheels, brushes and compounds, a polisher can produce satin, brushed or matte effects rather than a mirror shine, depending on the design.
