Filigree

Filigree is delicate ornamental metalwork made from fine threads of gold or silver twisted and soldered into lace like openwork patterns.

Filigree is a wirework craft in which thin threads of gold or silver are twisted, curled and soldered into intricate, lace like patterns. The openwork uses little metal for its size, giving pieces a light, airy character, and versions of the technique appear across many cultures and centuries.

How filigree is made

The maker draws metal down into very fine wire, often twisting two strands together for texture, then shapes the wire into scrolls, spirals and curls by hand. These elements are arranged, sometimes within an outline frame, and soldered together at their contact points.

The skill lies in soldering so many tiny joints without melting the delicate wire, and in keeping the pattern even. The result is an openwork surface where the gaps are as much a part of the design as the metal.

Why it still appears in modern pieces

Filigree adds fine detail and a sense of heritage that solid metal cannot easily match, and because it is openwork it keeps a piece light despite an elaborate look.

Today the patterns can also be modelled in CAD and cast, which reproduces the appearance of filigree more quickly, though true hand wirework remains prized for its craftsmanship. Either way, the delicate structure needs careful polishing and handling.

FAQ

Filigree, in short.

Is filigree fragile?

It is more delicate than solid metalwork because of the fine wire and openwork, so it needs gentle handling and careful cleaning. Well made filigree is still perfectly wearable, just less forgiving of rough treatment.

Is filigree always handmade?

Traditionally yes, from soldered wire. Modern workshops can also model the pattern in CAD and cast it, which mimics the look faster, though hand wirework is still valued for its authenticity.

What metals are used for filigree?

Gold and silver are the classics, as both draw into fine wire and solder well. Silver is especially common because of its workability and lower cost for elaborate designs.
