Lab-Grown Diamond
A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond created in a laboratory using HPHT or CVD, with the same properties as a mined stone.
A lab-grown diamond is a genuine diamond, made in weeks in a controlled facility rather than over billions of years in the earth. Its chemistry, crystal structure and optical properties are identical to a mined stone, so it is not a simulant like cubic zirconia or moissanite. It is graded on the same 4Cs and typically costs a good deal less than a natural diamond of equal quality.
How they are made: HPHT and CVD
Two methods dominate. High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) mimics the conditions deep in the earth, pressing a small diamond seed with carbon under enormous pressure and heat until a crystal grows. Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) places a seed in a chamber filled with carbon-rich gas that is energised so carbon atoms settle onto the seed layer by layer.
Both produce real diamond. HPHT is often used to grow rough and to improve colour, while CVD has become common for gem-quality stones because it offers good control over the process. A finished lab-grown diamond is then cut and polished exactly like a mined one.
How they compare with natural diamonds
Physically there is no difference you can see. The same fire, brilliance and hardness apply, and a jeweller cannot tell them apart by eye. Distinguishing origin needs specialised lab equipment, which is why labs such as IGI and GIA grade lab-grown stones and state the growth method and origin clearly on the report.
The clear practical difference is price. Lab-grown diamonds commonly cost a large fraction less than a comparable natural stone, and that gap has widened as production has scaled. The trade-off is resale value: natural diamonds hold value better, while lab-grown prices have fallen over time, so a lab-grown stone is usually bought to wear rather than as a store of value.
- Same chemistry, hardness and sparkle as a natural diamond
- Grown by HPHT or CVD in weeks, not billions of years
- Graded on the same 4Cs and certified by IGI or GIA
- Costs far less up front, but holds less resale value
How to buy one with confidence
Insist on a report that names the stone as laboratory-grown and states the growth method, and check for a laser inscription on the girdle noting the same. That paperwork protects you against a lab-grown stone being sold as natural. Beyond that, shop the 4Cs exactly as you would for a mined diamond and prioritise cut for sparkle.
- A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond, not a simulant.
- It is made by HPHT or CVD and grows in a matter of weeks.
- Its properties match a mined diamond and it is graded on the same 4Cs.
- It costs far less up front than a comparable natural stone.
- It holds less resale value, so it is usually bought to wear.
Lab-Grown Diamond, in short.
Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?
Yes. They have the same chemical, physical and optical properties as mined diamonds. They are not simulants like cubic zirconia or moissanite, and a jeweller cannot tell them apart by eye.
How much cheaper are lab-grown diamonds?
They typically cost a large fraction less than a comparable natural diamond, and the gap has grown as production scaled. Exact savings vary with size and quality, but the difference is substantial.
Do lab-grown diamonds hold their value?
Not as well as natural stones. Lab-grown prices have fallen over time as supply increased, so they are best bought to wear rather than as an investment or store of value.
Can you tell a lab-grown diamond from a natural one?
Not by eye or with a loupe. Origin is determined with specialised laboratory equipment, which is why reputable labs grade lab-grown stones and state the growth method on the report.
