The 4Cs

The 4Cs are the four factors, carat, cut, colour and clarity, used worldwide to grade and compare a diamond's quality.

The 4Cs are carat, cut, colour and clarity, the four factors GIA established in the middle of the last century to describe a diamond in a consistent way. Before them, diamond quality was described in vague, local terms. Today the 4Cs give buyers, sellers and labs a shared language, and together they set both how a stone looks and what it costs.

What each C measures

Carat is weight, where one carat is 200 milligrams. Cut is how well the proportions, symmetry and polish return light, graded Excellent to Poor for round brilliants. Colour, for white diamonds, is how little tint the stone has, graded D to Z. Clarity is how free the diamond is from inclusions and blemishes, graded Flawless to Included at 10x magnification.

The four are independent. A diamond can be large but poorly cut, or small but flawless and colourless. That is why two stones of the same carat can carry very different prices, and why a single grade never tells the whole story on its own.

  • Carat: weight, 200 milligrams per carat
  • Cut: light performance, Excellent to Poor
  • Colour: absence of tint, D to Z
  • Clarity: freedom from inclusions, Flawless to Included

How the 4Cs work together on price and looks

Price responds to all four at once, so the art of buying well is trading them against each other. Cut has the largest effect on sparkle, so many buyers protect the cut grade first, then choose an eye-clean clarity and a near colourless grade, and let carat take whatever budget is left.

Looks and value do not always move together. A near colourless, eye-clean, excellently cut one carat round can look every bit as beautiful as a flawless, colourless stone while costing far less, because the rarity you pay for at the very top of each scale is often invisible once the ring is worn.

Why the 4Cs matter for buyers and sellers

The 4Cs make diamonds comparable. A grading report from GIA or IGI records all four, so a buyer can weigh two stones from different sellers on equal terms, and a retailer can price a catalogue on consistent, defensible criteria. For anything above a modest budget, checking the 4Cs on an independent report is the single best protection against overpaying.

Key points
  • The 4Cs are carat, cut, colour and clarity.
  • GIA created the framework so diamonds could be graded consistently worldwide.
  • Each C is independent, which is why prices vary so widely at a given weight.
  • Cut drives sparkle, so many buyers protect it first when trading off.
  • An independent report records all four and lets you compare stones fairly.
FAQ

The 4Cs, in short.

What are the 4Cs of a diamond?

Carat, cut, colour and clarity. Carat is weight, cut is light performance, colour is the absence of tint, and clarity is freedom from inclusions. GIA created the system so diamonds could be graded consistently.

Which of the 4Cs is most important?

Cut has the biggest effect on how a diamond sparkles, so many experts rank it first. The best C depends on your priorities, but a strong cut makes the other three look their best.

How do the 4Cs affect price?

All four push price at once. Carat and colour move it most at the high end, cut and clarity add rarity, and the top grade of each carries a premium that is often invisible once set.

Do I need all four grades on a report?

Yes, for any significant purchase. A GIA or IGI report lists all four so you can compare stones fairly and confirm you are paying for what the seller claims.
