Gold Rate
The current market price of gold, usually quoted per gram by purity and updated daily from global spot prices.
The gold rate is the live price of gold that every jewellery price is built on. It flows down from the international spot price, gets adjusted for currency, local duties and jeweller markups, and is quoted per gram by purity, so you see a 22K rate and a 24K rate side by side. Because a piece's metal value is simply weight times purity fraction times this rate, keeping the rate current is what keeps an entire catalogue priced correctly.
What drives the gold rate
The starting point is the global spot price, set in international markets and quoted in US dollars per troy ounce. That moves constantly with demand, interest rates, geopolitics and investor sentiment. From there, several local factors stack on top before a rate reaches a shop counter.
Currency is the first: a country importing gold converts the dollar price into local currency, so exchange rate swings move the local gold rate even when the dollar spot price is flat. Then import duties and taxes are added, and finally each jeweller may apply a small premium. The result is the per gram rate quoted for a given purity that day.
- Global spot price, quoted per troy ounce in US dollars.
- Currency exchange rate against the dollar.
- Local import duties and taxes.
- Jeweller premiums and local demand.
From per ounce to per gram by purity
The spot price is per troy ounce of pure gold, but shops sell per gram of a given karat, so two conversions happen. First divide the per ounce price by 31.1035 to get the per gram price of pure 24K gold. Then multiply by the purity fraction, 0.916 for 22K or 0.75 for 18K, to get the working rate for that grade.
So if 24K works out to 77 dollars per gram, the 22K rate is about 77 times 0.916, near 70.5 per gram, and the 18K rate is 77 times 0.75, near 57.8 per gram. Those per gram, per purity rates are the numbers that go into pricing individual pieces.
Why a live rate matters in pricing
Metal value is the biggest part of most jewellery prices, and it depends directly on the gold rate. When the rate moves, every product made of gold should reprice, or the shop is either underpricing and losing margin or overpricing and losing sales. Editing thousands of prices by hand is impractical, which is why rates are treated as a live input.
A rules driven system stores the current rate once, then recalculates every affected product from its weight, purity and making charge, so the storefront and the admin panel always show the same accurate figure. Updating the rate and recalculating flows the change through the whole catalogue at once.
- The gold rate is the live per gram price of gold by purity.
- It derives from the global spot price per troy ounce.
- Currency, duties, taxes and premiums shape the local rate.
- Metal value equals weight times purity fraction times rate.
- A live rate keeps a whole catalogue priced correctly.
Gold Rate, in short.
Why does the gold rate change every day?
Because it tracks the global spot price, which moves constantly with demand, currencies, interest rates and world events. Local currency shifts, duties and premiums add further daily movement.
How is the 22K rate calculated from the 24K rate?
Multiply the 24K per gram rate by the 22K purity fraction of 0.916. If 24K is 77 per gram, the 22K rate is about 70.5 per gram.
Why is the gold rate quoted per gram in India?
Because jewellery is bought and sold by weight in grams there. The international per troy ounce price is converted to a per gram rate, then scaled by purity for each karat.
How does the gold rate affect a piece's price?
It sets the metal value, the largest part of most prices. Metal value is the piece's weight times its purity fraction times the gold rate, before stones, making charges and taxes are added.
