Brilliance

Brilliance is the total white light a diamond reflects back to the eye from its surface and interior.

Brilliance is the bright, white light you see returning from a diamond. It combines light bouncing off the surface with light that enters the stone, reflects off the internal facets, and comes back out of the top. GIA counts brilliance as a core part of the cut grade, and it is the main reason a well cut diamond looks alive.

Where brilliance comes from

Light enters through the table and crown, travels into the stone, and ideally reflects off the pavilion facets like a set of mirrors before returning to your eye. When the pavilion angle is right, almost all that light bounces back out of the top. When it is wrong, light leaks out of the bottom or sides and the diamond looks dark or washed out.

This is why brilliance is really a story about proportion, not carat. A shallow or deep stone loses light no matter how large it is. The precise crown and pavilion angles of a well cut diamond are what channel the maximum white light back to the viewer.

Brilliance, fire and scintillation

Brilliance is one of three light effects that make up a diamond's appearance. Brilliance is the white light, fire is the flashes of spectral colour, and scintillation is the sparkle and the play of light and dark as things move. GIA blends all three into the cut grade, but brilliance is the steady brightness you notice first.

Because brilliance depends on cut, it is the clearest reason cut quality beats size for sparkle. A smaller Excellent cut diamond can return more light and look livelier than a bigger stone cut to save weight. If you want a diamond that reads bright across a room, protect the cut grade before chasing carat.

  • Brilliance: total white light returned
  • Fire: white light split into rainbow colours
  • Scintillation: sparkle and light-dark contrast on movement
  • All three are driven by cut and proportions

FAQ

Brilliance, in short.

What is diamond brilliance?

It is the total white light a diamond reflects back to your eye, from both its surface and its interior. Strong brilliance is what makes a diamond look bright and lively.

What is the difference between brilliance and fire?

Brilliance is white light returned from the stone. Fire is white light split into spectral colours, the rainbow flashes. Both come from cut quality, and together with scintillation they define a diamond's sparkle.

How do I get more brilliance in a diamond?

Prioritise cut. A GIA Excellent or Very Good cut with correct proportions returns the most light. Cut matters more than carat, colour or clarity for brilliance.
